Scroll down for more glass and jewelry topics. Linda started studying STEUBEN GLASS 20 years ago, when she opened a shop in Bedford Hills, N.Y. She always loved art glass of the art nouveau period. She found the glass of Frederick Carder (steuben glass from that period ) to be especially beautiful with an amazing variety of glass. These are a few types of the steuben glass of this period.
Steuben Aurene: Gold Aurene was the first decorative iridescent colored glass produced at the Steuben Glass works about 1890. It has a beautiful bright gold iridescence. Blue iridescent glass was introduced in 1905. Blue is less common than gold. There is also Brown Aurene, Red Aurene and Green Aurene. These are usually decorated pieces, with an Aurene background. The glass is sometimes just signed "aurene" and sometimes signed with steuben signature and aurene. Sometimes just steuben signature.
Steuben Calcite Glass: perfected about 1915. It has a white tone with ivory translucency. It was used for ceiling fixtures and for transmitting light. It is also used for the outside of cased glass such as "aurene on calcite".
Steuben Ivrene: is a translucent white glass with an iridescent surface. Made in the 1920s. Vases, and other decorative glass objects.
Steuben Tyrian Glass: Rare, opaque glass. Shading from green to bluish purple. Usually decorated with applied Gold Aurene leaves and trailed threads.
Steuben Verre de Soie: Iridescent glass with smooth silky surface
For other colors and effects, there is Air Trap, Bubbles, Cintra glass, Cluthra glass, Florentia, Intarsia, Mandarin Yellow, Mica-Flecked Decoration, Millefiori glass, Moss Agate, Opalescent glasses, Rose Quartz, Rouge Flambe, Ruby glasses. These techniques can be found described in The Glass of Frederick Carder by Paul V. Gardner, a book specializing in Carder Steuben Glass. The variety of Steuben glass from this period is wonderful, and very beautiful. See a few of these pictured on my site and enjoy. All items are guaranteed as represented to be authentic from the Carder Steuben period.
